3/26/2018

Today, every new client seeks the mobile version of their website. This is essential as well because different designs of the web pages are needed for BlackBerry, iPHone, iPad, Kindle, netbook etc. In fact the screen resolution of all of them should also be compatible. The number of design inventions however, is expected to increase more in the coming era and with the changing trends in the development arena and this madness will never ever stop in anyway.

What is Responsive Web Design?

It involves an approach that encourages the design and development of the web pages responding to the environment and behavior of the user depending upon the orientation, platform and screen size.

Responsive Web Desig

Responsive Web Design practices involve a mixture of images, grids and layouts and an excellent use of CSS media queries. It means a website should be designed in a way that if the user switches it from laptop to iPad, it should automatically change its resolution, scripting abilities and image size. In other words, the website should be advanced enough to respond automatically as per the preferences of the user. Hence, no different design and development phase would be needed for every new gadget evolving in the market.

Custom web design solutions are now offered to all types of users. Media Queries, Scripts and Fluid Layouts are some ideas of the most abstract way of thinking that help in reformatting the web pages and mark-up effortlessly. However, responsive web design is not just about adjusting the screen resolutions and automatically resizing the images, but a whole new thinking related to design features as listed below:-

Flexible Layouts

Earlier, flexible layouts were almost a luxury for the websites and layout columns and texts i.e. the structural elements were the only things flexible in a design. Image breaking layouts and flexibility of designs to ‘not that flexible’ were the cases with design scenario that time. But now, the things have changed. Images can now adjust themselves automatically and due to workarounds, the layouts never break. In fact, quick switch can be possible for the devices now from portrait orientation to landscape or from a large computer to an iPad.

Flexible Images

Responsible Web Designing facilitates a number of techniques for proportionately resizing the images. The most popular option is using CSS’s max-width for a quick and easy fix. This has proved to be a great as well as simple technique for resizing images beautifully. Note that ‘max-width’ doesn’t supports in Internet Explorer but using width: 100% would help you in eradicating the problem perfectly in an IE based style sheet.

Media Queries

Screen, print and handheld etc all the media types that CSS 2.1 supports are supported by CSS3 in responsive web designing process. In fact, it adds dozens of many new media features including device-width, max-width, color and orientation. You can even create multiple style sheets and perform basic layout alterations that are defined for fitting the ranges of the widths.

CSS3 Media Queries

There is some specific usage of CSS3 media queries as well for creating responsive web designs. Many of them have are relevant in today’s usage and will definitely benefit in the coming future. Here, minimum browser or screen width is set using the min-width property including a certain set of style. If the limit is below for anything, the styles or the style sheet links will be ignored. Opposite the things will be for the max-width property. Anything above the screen width or maximum browser specified will not be applicable to the respective media query.

Javascript

Javascript is a method that is especially used as a back-up to the devices that leave supporting all of the CSS3 media query options. Fortunately, a pre-made Java Script library is also here to make the older browsers support CSS3 media queries.

There are many ways we can pair up the CSS media queries with JavaScript. Always remember that you cannot fully rely over the media queries, but they give you fantastic options for responsive web design when they come up with pure CSS-based solutions. And the inclusion of JavaScript helps in accommodating far more variations to their combination.

Hiding or Showing Content

Making big things shrink proportionally and rearranging the elements is possible to make everything fit, as the screen gets smaller. It seems really great. However, making the entire content from a large screen available on the mobile devices or smaller screen gadgets is not always easy. Some of the best practices for mobile environments like more focused content, simpler navigation, lists or rows instead of various columns make it easy.
